As Roger said, there could never have been a Japanese HMV gramophone as this fell under the Victor domain. Any similarity is either just coincidental due to the general design aesthetic of the period or due to reciprocal arrangements to share specific components. The latter would not apply to the 97 HMV however.

See 'His Master's Gramophone' page 214 for a picture of an identical 97 from 1941. It has a more normal winder knob, but that 'fishtail' shape (in plastic rather than wood) is found on some 102s and 97s in the mid-1930s. This could be a left-over used up in the wartime shortage, or could simply have been cannibalised from another machine at some time.

As you have probably gathered, I did find the 'unusual' (for a non Japanese model) winding handle some-what intriguing and appreciate your clarification and explanation.
