I often buy records and cylinders from Forum member Rich Gordon (rgordon939) and always find his stuff to be excellent and well-priced. Recently I bought some brown wax cylinders from Rich and was thoroughly impressed by the great packing job - they arrived safe and sound and, and as I am someone who packs and ships everything from tiny musical lockets to Mills Violanos, I was very impressed. Rich did a better job packing those cylinders then I could have. He taught me a good lesson, and it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but Rich surely did.
Don't hesitate to buy wax cylinders from Rich for fear of damage en route.

What was the method?

WOW!!! That is an amazing compliment especially from someone who packs machines like they were eggs. Raphael can pack and ship any kind of machine anywhere in the world. Something I wouldn’t even think of doing. I bow to the Shipping King.

Re: A SHOUT OUT TO RICH GORDON
Curt,
Rich used everything from adding extra cotton inside the tubes, shrink wrapping each cylinder, peanuts, bubble wrap, etc. His combination of all of these, plus being well-spaced in a very sturdy carton, made damage almost impossible. The one unknown with shipping wax cylinders is the temperature extremes they suffer en route, and the slightest shock may cause them to crack. Rich certainly minimizes that possibility.

I gave a shout out to Rich's cylinder packing 16 months ago, and showed how he packaged a single cylinder:
