Unusual "Temporary Victor 06 horn

Post by Valecnik »

I found this horn on eBAY several years ago aleady and got it at a very cheap price. May not be nearly as valuable as a wood horn but what's interesting is the paper tag on the neck of the horn which says:

"This horn may be exchanges without charge for the Japanese horn with which the machine should be equipped but which is out of stock owing to the Japanese-Russian war." I've also got somewhere an advertisement from "Munseys" magazine showing a Vic 06 with this horn.

Below is a picture of the horn showing the paper tag, the horn on a Vic 06 and the "Japanese horn with which the machine should be equipped"

I've never seen a horn with that sort of inscription... do you use it? I don't know if I would for fear of scratching or damaging the wording, which seems to be right at the point of the horn that attaches/mounts to the horn elbow.

and nice victor VI as well. one of these days I'll find one decently priced.

Brian, The horn came separately, not with the machine so I don't use it. I very carefully put it on the machine one time just to take the picture. The "normal" horn for such an early victor "06" not "VI" would have been the the paper mache "japan" horn.

Even at this early time... a global market! I wonder why victor was importing these paper mache horns from Japan?

I can only guess why the horns came from Japan, but here's my idea. Is it possible that the horns didn't come from Japan, but the lacquer did? Black lacquer was commonly called a "Japan Finish" back in the early 20th century. Maybe it's just the lacquer that they couldn't get? As I said, just a guess.

Bruce,

That's a great horn - and it answers a question I've had for years: "Why does the Victor 6 in that Munsey's ad have a flower horn? And with convex petals? And for evidently a very short time?" Thanks for posting that. What a wonderful horn - - or should I say wonderful label?

By the way, is your machine stamped "Vic 6" or Vic 06"? I've never seen any Arabic numbered Victors preceded with a "0", but there's lots I haven't seen...like your horn!

Thanks again -

George P.

Does someone have a photo of the Japanned horn that would normally have been supplied with the Vic. VIs? This temporary horn looks just like one I remember seeing in a photo several years ago--at least to my untrained eye.

The "japanned horn" is the other pic I posted here, the black horn.

Looks like "V NO 6" to my eye.

The Japan horn is the belled horn in the two photos.
