Can You Help Complete the Mystery???

Post by Shawn »

So, I have a Berliner String Wind carrying case with what is possibly the only known partial inside lid label (which interestingly will be available at Wayne show for sale!!!!).

Several of us have puzzeled, perused other Berliner documentation, and had many discussion on what the original text was that is missing from the label. Here is the label.

Here are three versions of what we've come up with so far. We're pretty certain that all is correct, with the exception of what is in red. None of the three versions of what is in red feels right, or matches what precious lettle fragments of letters remain.

If you have an original label, or some amazing insite, it would be awesome for you to enlighten us all and finally solve this mystery!!!

I believe the last word in the title should be "MACHINE". In other words, "DIRECTIONS FOR OPERATING THE MACHINE".

That's why we need more eyes looking at this. Jerry, I believe you are correct. There are several period pieces that only refer to this as a Hand-Wind. Machine makes more sence based on the artifacts of letters remaining and the relative spacing to those letters below! Great Job!

Hi Shawn,
My choice would be the last one posted with one slight modification:

"set soundbox per instruc-" instead of "set the soundbox per instruc-"

Having owned a reproduction hand wind in the past, the needle of the soundbox must be set on the record first, because two hands are needed to operate the machine!
