Post by debndunk »

Can anyone give me any info on Sights and sounds of Edison. I'm looking to buy either a Music master or a Cygnet horn. Any info would be appreciated many thanks Gordon.

Hi Pete, I would like it to go on my Triumph that I have just finished restoring. Gordon.

Don makes these horns by hand, and they are beautiful, they are wood throughout. Don had meticulously studied wood horns, and has recreated, as far as can be known exacting methods for the manufacture, I believe they are as good or better than original ones.

Hello,
Don's horns are very nice! I have bought three from him, an Edison Music master, a Victor oak spear tip, and a smooth oak Columbia horn. If you send him pictures of the machine you have restored he can try and match the color of the horn to your machine case. The Victor in the picture below has one of Don's horns

That's one beautiful machine there! I really like it, unfortunately, trading my early style VV-IV, VV-VI, and VV-IX would still run short.

I've known Don for thirty years. He is a stand-up fellow, a fine businessman, and an excellent craftsman. His horns are nonpariel, are accurate reproductions, and are rather sturdier than the originals, being made using modern adhesives along with carefully selected veneers. The matching of wood grain patterns on his horns is generally much better than that on extant originals. His finishes are excellent these days, to boot.

There are some posts regarding Don Gfell (with horn photos, below) on the second oldest page of this section of the forum from January, 2009. Also, do a search for Gfell on the board for more posts.
