My new VV 1-90

Post by 52089 »

Pictures per request. I found this at the Danbury show. It's the third one I've seen in the last year and probably in the best condition of the 3, other than the turntable felt. I've cleaned it but have chosen not to hit it with Howard's. I may wax it, but then again, I may not. The reproducer is needs to be rebuilt. Still, I'm very happy to have this.

The 1-90 is the smallest Orthophonic phonograph. Behind the grill cloth is a small, folded horn. It's perfectly adequate for a small room and has decent sound, albeit with no real bass. I have a 4-3 as well. I find that the 4-3 sound is significantly louder, no doubt due to the much larger horn, but in my small bedroom I don't really want "loud". You'd be quite surprised to hear how this plays a Victor Scroll with a good reproducer!

Thanks for posting the pics. That machine is a beauty. I will keep my eyes out for one. Maybe even trade my Japanese Victor J 1-80 for one.

Why not post pics of your 1-80? I'm sure many would like to see them.

I will post pics of it when I get back home.

Actually, The Victrola website used a picture of my machine for their description of the VV J 1-80. The description says there is a double spring motor, however mine is a Victor "pancake" single spring motor similar to what you find in the VV 2-55 portables. It had rivets on the spring barrel, so I filed them off and lubricated the spring and re-assembled the spring barrel with small screws and nuts.

Nice machine. I have a 1-70 and love it, I can imagine the 1-90 sounds even better. Congrats
Why do we need signatures when we are on a first avatar basis?

I almost went to that show, but I didn't make it, I would have been tempted by that machine. Very nice.
