Who was the leader of the Atlantic Dance Orchestra?

Post by Paal1994 »

In Ronald Dethelfson's book "Edison Blue Amberol Recordings 1915-1929" it says that the band was directed by Dave Kaplan.
But in another source it says the it was directed by Louis Katzman.
Do anyone in the forum know which source is right?

I think it must have been Katzman. If you type in "Atlantic Dance Orchestra (Louis Katzman-bandleader)" into your search bar, you'll get 100's of hits, where as Kaplan only turns up a couple in the same search. That's not to say that Kaplan didn't lead the orchestra for a short time??
Here's a little bit of info that turned up for Katzman-
I think I might have an "Anglo-Persians Orch" recording on youtube.

http://www.nfo.net/usa/k1.html#Katzman

Just a few of the over 81 recordings by Louis Katzman included such band names as:
Anglo-Persians Orch. (ca. 1927-1930) Also called the
Whittall's Anglo-Persians for the Whitall's radio show.
Atlantic Dance Orchestra (ca. 1920s) Listen to them below.
Biltmore Club Orch. (ca. 1929)
Brunswick Salon Orchestra (ca. 1931)
The Castillians. (1927-1934
Jazz-O-Harmonists
Louis Katzman Colonial Orch. (ca. 1929)
Louis Katzman Concert Orch. (ca. 1930)
Louis Katzman Brunswick Orch. (ca. 1929)
Whitall's Anglo-Persians Orch. (ca. 1927-1930) Listen below.
Louis Katzman and His Orch. (Mostly 1934)

The Atlantic Dance Orchestra may not have the prestige of the Golden Gate Orchestra or the Georgia Melodians, but they were nonetheless an excellent dance band. I suspect that many Edison dance band enthusiasts overlook them because they were an in-house orchestra. But then again, why should I complain? That's all the more records for me at reasonable prices!

Shane,

I think you are right that Louis Katzman was the bandleader.
But I think it's possible that Kaplan might have lead it for a short time. But I'll change to Katzman in the description on my two YouTube videos of the Atlantic Dance Orchestra.

Rocky,

They were indeed an excellent dance band.
"Bees Knees", "Radio" and "If Winter Comes" are their best recordings IMHO.

Paal,

How about the Atlantic Dance Orchestra recording "Tell with with smiles"? Here it is on Blue Amberol 4755:

Rocky,

That's a great one too. I have heard it before but I forgot about it until now.
In the monthly supplement of Edison Blue Amberol Recordings from August 1923 it says this about "Tell Me With Smiles": "The Atlantic Dance Orchestra does a superb piece of recording that the most discriminating dancer can not criticise." I think the description fits very good with the recording.
Have you heard their rendition of "California, Here I Come"?
It used to be on YouTube, but the user removed it... :(
