Amberola 1B that came "Over the Waves"

Post by Valecnik »

I hope you are all not tired of hearing about my "toys" getting shipped to our home in Czech Republic. Well most of them are reassembled and running now and here's one example.

Since this 1B made it's way "Over the Waves" from the US, I thought it appropriate that you hear it playing "Over the Waves" by N.Y. Military Band!

Enjoy!

Beautiful phonograph. And no worries about anybody getting tired of hearing about it. That's the reason we come to this forum. To read anything and everything phonograph. Thanks for the post and video!

EXTREMELY nice machine. must be strange, having known them in a certain location, but now having them all with you in such a far away place (well, far away relative to where they were)... I recently moved into the victor building (converted apts in one of the old factory buildings) in camden, and seeing all the machines in here, compared with knowing where they've lived before, it's still kind of weird... particularly considering (at least for the victors) that even though I'm further away from the hometown and where I was living, they're right back to where they started... I'll snap some photos of the apt and the machines in it soon.

Very nice looking machine when it's all back together. Glad it made the trip ok. Those machines never get old. They just get better. Love the tune.

I did not know that was the name of that familiar tune. Thanks for taking the time to share!

Thanks all for your comments. It’s one of my favorite machines. I’ll post some more youTubes of this and others as time permits, (it seems almost never to permit though)

Thanks John, Yes my little GEM is a great announcer. She’s recently become enamored with the diamond disc, ”Let me call you sweetheart” by Raderman’s orch. She asks me to play “Sweetheart” all the time so that could be another post in the near future. :D

Brian, Yes it does seem strange. Some of these machines I've had for ages, (like the 1B) but until recently had not played or even had access to it for ~ 13 years. Do snap some photos. I for one would like to see them. I’m sure many others would too. How cool it must be to live in the Victor building. I suppose they wouldn’t let me live there though with all my Edisons. :monkey:

Thanks Phonocookie,

And if I have not mentioned it here before I’ll do it now. Thanks so much for letting me use your garage to consolidate my stuff for shipment. It was really a lifesaver. I suppose I owe you a beer or something for that.

Bruce,

I forgot to mention I too didn't know the name of that very popular old tune. Thanks, now I know what to look for! ;)

I read somewhere awhile back that it was originally written by a Mexican composer, Juventino Rosas, and was probably played much much faster as you might imagine. It would be interesting to hear a more Mexican rendition but I certainly like this one. I've also got it on diamond disc 80579 played by the Peerless Orchestra. The N.Y. Military Band version on blue amberol is the better of the two IMHO though.
