You wouldn't find this today

I just aquired a small can of mainspring lubricant to display on the chaachie shelf with a other phonographica. I read the directions on the can and it donned on me how in today's society this would never be allowed. Imagine telling the consumer to use gasoline!.
Anyway, it was a good read and harkens back to the day when life was safe.

It does say that Kerosene is safer. I degreased a spring with a bucket of WD-40, which is mostly Kerosene, and it did a good job.

Kerosene, mineral spirits, and most other solvent work pretty well, but I always use petrol because it cuts through the grease so much faster. You just got to take all the usual safety precautions when working with petrol, most of which apply to any solvent anyway.
I don't know about USA, but over here, petrol's cheaper than kero or turps too

Aside from the fire danger I'd say the main problem with gasoline is the fumes- miuch more volatile that kerosene and you can breathe in a lot of stuff even with a mask.

Vegetable cooking oil dissolves grease just as well as a petroleum-based solvents and is much less flammable and non-carcinogenic to boot.

I've never heard of kerosene being an ingredient in WD-doo doo. It is fish oil in a volatile solvent carrier.

Well, life really was safer in the days when people had the common sense to use dangerous products with care and to take responsibility for their missteps when things went wrong.
