I saw this picture too.
I can imagine ~ 1902 the guy had just bought this thing, dressed up in his Sunday best and posed for the picture. He probably spent a couple weeks wages on it or more.
Hopefully he was steady enought not to knock over the table with the machine or all those concert cylinders!
