So how many of these reproducers do you think are out there? What an amazing amount of money for a reproducer!

The last one of these I knew of sold about five years ago for $5000. The economy hasn't hurt Edison Duplex Reproducers, I guess. I bid on this but was blown out of the water...

Sorry you didn't win it George. I watched it end and with about 30 seconds left it was still at $1600. Quite a jump! I don't think the seller had any idea of what they had judging by the listing description.

I'm sure you're right - - the seller probably had a heart attack when the auction ended.
I must admit that I was mildly annoyed when someone felt compelled to write the seller suggesting the item be re-listed under "Edison Duplex," as that might attract more bids. Clearly the helpful writer wasn't interested in bidding, but why make things more expensive - or impossible - for the rest of us?
I know this has been discussed before - - just thought I'd share my impressions, even though the interference probably had no effect on the outcome in this case.

Would someone give me a brief explanation of what an "Edison Duplex Reproducer" is? What was it used for?

Re: Not Too Shabby For A Reproducer!
The duplex speaker is an automatic reproducer with the diaphragm enclosed in the center. It utilizes both sides of the diaphragm, (originally glass) so that the sound doesn't escape out of the bottom like other reproducers. This way, one could use two horns supposedly increasing volume. It was used most in the mid 1890's.
The one in the eBay auction looks to be in really good shape. It almost looks as if it was never used and sat in a nice dry place for 110 years or so.
