Edison Perfected

Post by Sidewinder »

Found this photo a few days ago & thought I'd share. Shows an Edison Perfected phonograph.

Very nice image. The horns are good examples of "made-to-order" goods that a local tinsmith might have provided (although the smaller horn looks like it may have begun life as a bugle or cornet). That crane looks like it could do double-duty in a modern auto shop!

What I find most interesting is the use of a "spectacle" model Class M for exhibitions. Sidewinder, you say that you "Found this photo a few days ago..." Do you have the original? If so, are there any markings? Is there more to see on the sign?

The photo looks decidedly European, probably British, or German.

Here is a British photo of a foot-treadle model Class T:

The small white chips resulting from shaving and recording on the Class T photo nicely illustrate E. T. Gilliland's remark of late August 1888 in a letter to Edison: "Wax bothers us a great deal, gets all over the machine and the floor."

This was before the introduction of containers to collect the chippings at source.
