HELP WITH ALVARA ORTHOPHONIC

Post by Pete Stratford »

I have always tried to collect machines that were post 1920 and so have never owned an Orthophonic Victrola.
I was just offered this Victor Alvara for $75. As it is not too large I am considering buying it. The cabinet appears to be walnut? It has
been in the family since new.
The only problem is the pot metal back bracket. The back bracket has swollen and cracked and the top has broken off. Someone did a
poor repair job using a piece of flat tin and a bolt. Does anyone know if a repro back bracket is available for this model?
Also an thoughts on this model?
Thanks
Pete

Jas Antiques sometimes has these repro back brackets. I bought one last year for a different model than yours. You might take a look and contact them if none show up on their ebay listing.

Ron Sitko also carries the back brackets. At $75, I'd grab that in a heartbeat! That model was only available in Canada, I'd make room for one if I ever saw one in my area.

Good luck,
Sean

The repair is not beautiful, but if it's solid and works... you have the advantage of being able to play the machine until a better bracket comes up!
