I know, another portable? Yep, and here it is....

Post by antique1973 »

Well, I kind of miss my old Brunswick upright and this one was only $50 on CL
so I figured why not? Its a Brunswick model 101. The motor is quiet surprisingly and it sounds good with acoustic records. Its pretty heavy too, does anyone know what kind of motor is in this one? I can't find any spec data on this model. It cranks up to about 80 turns which leads me to believe its a 2 spring at least.

As far as I'm aware, the Brunnie 101 came with the "Type F" single spring motor. The soundbox is a Goldring & not original to the machine, but with new gaskets will sound heaps better than the original soundbox. They put out a decent amount of bass.

Wow, I am surprised it has a single spring motor. It seems the Brunswick motors are
heavy though in general. I recall the motor that was in my upright
before was heavy as as a brick s**t house. :)

That kind of sucks the soundbox is not original. I was not familiar with this later model Brunswick and just assumed it was original since it seemed to fit the tone arm so well. Its all good though, at $50 even for the parts it was worth it.

Thanks for the info Shane! :)

I think the soundbox Neophone (John) shows at the beginning of this video is the correct one, BUT as you can see, his 101 is different to yours, so it obviously went through some changes. You might find the motor is a double spring, and it may have had a different Brunswick box to that in the video.
Im assuming yours is an earlier model than Johns because yours appears to be able to play vertical cut records too, and Johns has the soundbox facing the same way as the later panatrope models.

I have that same soundbox with the treble clef on an old Silvertone portable. Not original to the Brunswick.

No, I saw one once on Ebay in it's original box with a picture and "Goldring" printed across the top and sides of the box. That's not to say that other companies didn't copy the design, nor that Goldring didn't copy it from someone else. The example I own sounds very good, which is surprizing considering the original diaphragm is flat steel.

I have that machine with the original reproducer that plays both Pathé and standard records. It has a good sound but a bit hard, I think its because it doesn't use the rear for reflecting the sound which seems to increase the tone to my ear. Mine is able to easily play a 12 inch record but is very hard to crank even after having it serviced several times, runs quite however.

Mine sounds pretty good with the soundbox that's on it although it could use new
gaskets of course. Thanks for all the helpful info guys! :)
