A Victrola fit for a King?

Post by Johndoe64 »

I found this listing on EBay and was blown away by the details of the machine in the pictures! Does anybody have any information on it? It would be great to see a few more clear photos!

Wow. If the Shah commissioned this Victor and it survived then we have reason to believe the 3-reproducer Multiplex Graphophone the Shah ordered also survived into modernity!

As is so often the case, the eBay seller isn't well-informed. The Victrola pictured was decorated in the "Moorish Marquetry" option briefly offered by Victor. This machine was originally cataloged for $750.00 - - by far the most costly Victrola at the time. (By comparison, a Vernis-Martin Victrola was $400.00.)

I believe a member of this forum currently owns this machine.

So that the photos remain after the eBay auction closes...

I wonder: can anyone translate the inscriptions on this cabinet; or is it just faux-Arabic scribbling?

I doubt that it’s “faux-Arabic scribbling”, since these cabinets were actually sent to Morocco ‘in the white’ to be inlaid by craftsmen there.
