Adjusting On/Off/Speed Control knob on Model A Edison Gem

Post by gr8ham »

I've got the Late Model A keywind Gem back together that I have been cleaning and am thinking I have done something wrong with the little spring that sets the position of the On/Off function. I know it fits in between the casing and the foot of the motor frame, pointing toward the governor. The end of the lever that holds the leather pad is slightly pointed to engage with the spring to give a defined position to lock in place. However, when I pull the knob on the left side of the case all the way out to stop the motor, the end of the lever is off the left side of the spring. When pushing back in, the lever locks into the depression in the spring but doesn't allow it then to be adjusted to control the speed. Pushing the knob all the way in moves the lever's end off the right side of the spring but does allow for speed adjustment.

Can anybody confirm for me this is the correct set-up or have I done something wrong? I can't find any photos that show this part of the motor set up.

Thanks in advance!
