A wonderful job. Truly spectacular. I have always found ammonia to work very well cleaning gold plated parts without risk of going though the plating.

Jon,
Beautiful job that shows a caring restoration with lots of hours.
Can you share the type of stain and finish you used to get this wonderful result?
Thanks so much,
Lerria and David from Dallas

Thanks for posting the pictures. Masterful and sensitively done work. Great to see that this piece has been rescued and transformed to its rightful place as an heirloom-quality piece for future generations.

Strip and sand to 220
Mohawk Medium Mahogany wood dye diluted with acetone to get correct shade to under lid -wipe on
Zinnsers seal coat dewaxed shellac sprayed on with HVLP spray equipment- let dry for a week
Old masters grain filler mixed with Old Masters Mahogany Stain to fill grain -let dry for a week
Mohawk finishers choice nitro lacquer mixed 50% with 50% Old Masters nitro lacquer, both semi gloss with a 10 drops of Marson fish eye eliminator - sprayed on 3 coats with 400 sand between coats. I mixed the two lacquers because one was to glossy the other not enough so mixed was just right.
After 3 weeks dry time, wet sanded flat parts with 1,200-1,500, 2,000-3,000 then buffed with swirl remover.
