I just picked up this nice Columbia 211Z Viva Tonal Grafonola portable phonograph made in England. I thought portable phonographs were phased out in the 1930's, but based on some research on the internet this model was made in the 1940's. Is that correct?
I would appreciate any additional information.

You are correct, this one dates from the 1940s. HMV/Columbia Portables were made up to the fifties in England, and even in the sixties in some other countries.
