Interesting Recording ? Horn

Post by Pete Stratford »

Hello
I thought I would post a picture of what I think is a recording horn.
A few years ago I bought an Edison model A Triumph from the family
of the original owner. It came with a large brass bell horn and this
recording horn. What I thought was interesting was that it was not
painted. It had just been left in galvanized tin. Does anyone else
have one of these?

I had a similar recording horn that came with an early (1894) Columbia Type G Graphophone. It was long and black with a gold stripe around the end (like the smaller Columbia Q horns) and had a sawtooth hanger. The unusual part was that it had two lengthwise seams. It is now in Mike Lund's collection...

"No one needs a Victrola XX, a Perfected Graphophone Type G, or whatever you call those noisy things."

I have a horn with a similar galvanized metal body. Mine is not a recording horn though. If you ever want to sell it......I know somebody!

Thanks - Scott

Can you tell me the length and diameter of the open end as there is nothing to estimate scale.

I assume it ends in a tube matching a cylinder machine recorder,

it certainly looks like a good commercial item with the plain finish of a studio horn.
is it a thick gauge of metal?

And here is my (non-recording) example next to the 14" horn you recently sold me (which I am very pleased with!). I have to assume that these are home-made horns.

I'll fill in on the dimensions: The horn is 26” long and 6.75” across the bell per Pete

The size indicates a very good vocal recording horn.

I have several of these, probably since the 70s or early 80s. One of them no longer has it's hanger. Here are pictures of the one that does. It is 27" long with a 6 ¼" bell. It has a sort of greenish color to it.

Shawn, do you think Pete's horn is an Edison offering? You sold me the one I picture above that I have always assumed was a craftsman's production and is similar in construction.
