In 1962 when I was 8 years old we visited the Henry Ford Museum and that was a time when all of the phonographs were out on display on tables. Quite a number of machines were on the floor as well where anyone could touch and handle them. Needless to say most of the machines were picked and pilfered and beat up from all of the handling. I was intrigued however with a large machine sitting on the floor under one of the tables with the lid still on it. It was a Kinetaphone! It took me some time to figure out how to get the lid off to see what was underneath. I was finally successful and delighted to see everything appeared to be intact with this machine. I wasn't able to look at it very long before my parents started calling me to come. I always wondered about that machine hoping it didn't get picked apart like the others.

The Massani painting is so lifelike - it's really stunning.

It's actually called the Johnson Victrola Museum in Dover, DE. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

After visiting these photos once again, I wonder why the left end of the mandrel is turned down smaller than the rest, and tapered? Could it be someone was experimenting with a removable cylinder of some type? Interesting.

I made it back to the Edison and Ford winter estates in Fort Myers today. It has been 25 years since my last visit. I thought I would share some more photos for anyone interested. No trip to Sanibel Island would be complete with a visit to the Edison Estates. My 18 year old daughter and her best friend even seemed to enjoy it.
