I don't know.... I played around with the number at the European Patent Database site --

http://gb.espacenet.com/search97cgi/s97 ... N/home.hts

and found this:

Improved devices for delivering selected gramophone records from cabinets

http://v3.espacenet.com/publicationDeta ... 8370A&KC=A

The mechanism looks identical to me:

Well that certainly looks like the gadget. I would still be concerned about so little of the record actually being supported in the grooves. Makes me wonder if this whole unit was intended to slide into the base of a phonograph cabinet.

Thanks a million Orthofan! That is definitely the same mechanism as the one in my storage rack.

@gramophone, when I do put records in it, there is very little of the record actually protected. I only keep my dud records of little value in it, but perhaps it did one sit in the base of a cabinet.

Ortho_fan is Da Man! Good sleuthing. I searched around some earlier today and couldn't come up with anything. There's always an answer out there just waiting to be found.

I'm not sure if I'd put my treasured discs in to it for fear that Nipper would lean against them whilst listening to the Victrola, and make them all look like Oreos with a bite taken out. I think the idea that this is made to go into a record cabinet is very likely.
