Was told that my Victrola was running slow

Post by Edisonfan »

Recently I had a viewer tell my a recording of Vernon Dalhart’s Wreck of the Old 97 was sounding slow, and that I should adjust the speed on my machine. I have never had anyone tell me my records sounded slow? I deleted that video, check the speed on my machine. Even used a Strobe a scope I printed out, and used it, and everything seemed okay. I even cleaned the record, which was not dirty. I even used a tungs-tone needle instead of a steel one. Since the record is a Victor one that says use Tungs-tone needles only?

I've been listening to that song, all my life, (so far). It sounds just fine to me. Some folks just have a different "ear" for what speed suits them. You realize too, I'm sure, that "78 rpm" is not a fast and hard rule for all records. Still, your playing of it sounds correct to my ear.

Agreed, sounds spot on to me.

Sounds fine. I've heard it a click faster or slower or that same speed--it's still a great record.

I use an app on my phone and tape my phone to the platter to measure the speed of my turntables. I’d say it does a pretty good job.

Sounds fine.
It could be that the viewer uses a phonograph that runs fast.

James.
