Data Plate on Victrola XVI

I just noticed that the data plate on my late model Victrola XVI has a hole punched out after the serial number. I understand that they were no longer using letters after the serial number at this point (1917-1918), and I wonder if a suffix letter was removed from this plate. I've never seen this before.
