Clueless seller with HMV Pigmy Grand

Post by estott »

This seller has a very nice HMV "Pigmy Grand" for sale, but be prepared to cringe when you click on the video and watch him play the record

I didn't even know you could do that and still get a record to play!! I thought the chewing of the grooves would stop the motor. Wow.

I am surprised myself. It's possible to d it if you twist the soundbox in the right direction, but it's still cringe inducing.

I'd like the machine though but can't afford it at that price.

That is indeed a "Pygmy Grand" case but the backbracket and tonearm are from a later machine - the Pygmy Grand should have a detachable bar (unique to this model) that releases the tonearm so it can be packed in a case.

I assume this would not have originally been equipped with a Victrola #2 reproducer. What would the original have been?

Would be nice to have, but not at that price. At least it has a good strong motor!

I'm pretty certain it would have been equipped with an Exhibition reproducer

I think that the needle would have to be very blunt to do this. Try it with a new sharp needle on that record you always wanted to trash.......
