Zonophone phonograph

Post by dzavracky »

I was fortunate to be able to pick this up today. I know nothing about zonophone machines, but it seems as if it was upgraded from a front mount machine at some point. (Thanks Charles). Here are some before and after pictures.

It did not come with the crank... but the seller thinks it may be with the records in his attic. I hope he finds it :? I was hopeful about getting it to run, but the brass gear that goes on the mandrel is messed up. It looked like the little pin that holds the gear onto the mandrel shaft fell out while the machine was wound up... it probably fell causing it spin real fast and mess up the teeth. Maybe I can fix it... but I got tired and didn’t want to break it, so I stopped working on it.

Any info you guys can give me about this machine would be great!

Cheers,
David

You did not tell me the guy mentioned records in the attic. I heard the "looking for the crank" part but not the records.

Saying this was the seller's granddads--you know how cool it is to have records & keep them with the machine? It's awesome.

See if the guy will offload the original records.

I’m still talking to him. I told him I wanted to see the records... but I think they’re buried in the attic.

Very Nice!!! I have never found a Zonophone phonograph in over 38 years of digging. I have only seen them at shows or already in a collection. I hope the crank shows up if they dig for the records.

Wonderful!
I believe herein you can get the info on how to replace the broken gear, and the crank, or get good new replicas. Fine if you could also get the records!

The spindle gear is too messed up. I can’t fix it. Somehow a few of the teeth on one side of the gear got worn down shorter than the all the other teeth. So when the gear tries to mesh with the spindle gear, it instead pushes against it.

Does any one know if and where I can get a replacement?

Also thanks everyone for the kind comments. I’m super excited to have this machine

In case there's no direct replacement, I'm sure that many colleagues herein that have a lathe and master abilities, could make a new one for you! Just place it in the WANTED section of traders...

I saw this on FB too. Nice machine, and a very nice buy! Glad you got it! It was made after Victor took over Zonophone, so a Victor slotted crank would be appropriate. The "conversion" to a rear mount arrangement was done by the factory and is proper and correct.

It's hard to tell from your photos, but the gear doesn't look all thaaaaat bad. If my shop weren't torn down :( , I could make you one.
