MANY NIGHTS HAVE I SAT BACK WITH A CUPPA & BATHED MY SOUL IN THE SOUNDS OF YESTERYEAR THAT IS SO RELAXING & RARE, MOST OF US HAVE NOT YET EXPERIENCED IT, MOST OF US NEVER WILL...
One thing I have learned about listening to antique phonographs. It is not a physically relaxing endeavor. I find that while I am listening, I am choosing the next record and placing it on a machine and winding it up. Then walking over the currently playing machine as the record is usually close to ending, then stopping and lifting the repro when the record is done, walking back to the next machine starting it up. Going back to the first machine and putting the record away, then choosing the next record and start the same routine over. I rarely get to sit down. While mentally it is a great escape, physically it is an active hobby.

Especially so if you play classical works, like those many album sets of symphonies and what not, with 8-10-12 or more sides. If I had been living back then, the phonograph (windup or electrical) would have to have been placed right by my listening chair.Brad wrote:

Jumping up to walk over to whatever record player (even now) every 4 minutes or so to change/flip records really takes you out of the moment when you've got your mind set on an extended work. In some ways those were the bad old days.

I can't work out whether I like this, or it's hideous.
It will be auctioned on Friday in Sydney at Lawson's (auctioneers) sale of the Robert Holmes à Court Collection.

Same here, at first glance I thought it was kind of attractive in a way, but if actually placed in a room, it'd likely grow wearisome to look at.recordo wrote:I can't work out whether I like this, or it's hideous.
Is that really a crapophone? It looks more like a frankophone constructed from some 1950's end table or something. Even though the auction claims it as an original type machine.

Hilarious. I especially like the ones from Asia on eBay all the time.

Here's another machine from the auction catalogue.
Real HMV or have crapophones now hit cabinet models?

Looks like the same model from the original poster... just turned up in my local New Jersey craigslist.
