Suggestions for Home Model B case putty

Post by bartongreg8238 »

I have an Edison home model B that I am restoring. The lid has a few gouges and missing laminate pieces that I was able to patch, but I am at a loss for what to use for putty on some of the smaller areas to fill. It is a blood red color with shellac finish. Using putty from the hardware store seems to dissolve with alcohol, which makes it hard to cover it with shellac. Any thoughts as what type of putty to use?

There are waxes for this purpose that are melted into the damaged areas with a heated palette knife, then scraped smooth, and grained with graining pens. Mohawk makes these.

John is referring to furniture repair "burn in sticks", which work very well. You can also cut small pieces of veneer to patch small areas.

A reliable source for buying all types of wood repair items and Mohawk brand finishes is:

I personally know the owner, Walter Smith, who is also a phonograph collector/restorer and is extremely knowledgeable. He worked 30 years in furniture factories before starting his own business...

I am attaching a complete catalog of restoration supplies.
