English HMV Smooth Horn Restoration.

Post by markiemark »

Got the machine, which is very clean, up North of Auckland NZ in a place called Kaitaia. But the horn, has suffered from humdity. Bob Schljak had one with a Russian dealers logo. Mine doesn't. Buggar! Dates around 1913/14 . How would one approach this, from a Conservator, Restorers point of view? Borrowed a couple of your pictures Bob ;) Cheers Markie

Very good-looking mahcine and horn! The flaws look minor, if it were mine I would only fill the voids with wax of the same color as the horn.

I f it were mine, I probably would keep it as is. It appears to display very well, so just enjoy it. I have 3 wood horns, all of which have some flaws but I have decided to enjoy them as they are.

They should all look that good. I like to see some signs of age. Perfect is boring.

Along those same lines, shellac sticks of the correct color might be a better choice, they blend in well and are a permanent fix.
