Recent Amberola DX purchase

Post by ChesterCheetah18 »

Hi all. I thought I would share a few photos of an Amberola DX I bought this morning. The plusses:
The case has the original finish with none of the veneer issues common with Amberolas. Plating is all very nice, and the bedplate is good with about 75-80% striping. Spring is good, and motor runs but could use oiling. Reproducer seems good.
The minuses:
The drive belt is wonky (rubber and looks to be about ¼" thick!) and it looks like the tensioner needs attention. The top front grille has been stripped to bare metal. All in all, it should be a nice one once it's up to snuff.

The pluses definitely out weigh the minuses. Congrats!!!!

I'd much rather see the Fireside mechanism than the Gem so that's also a plus.

Overall a pretty nice machine. Nice thing about this machine is if you have a spare mandrel and gears from a Model A Fireside you can turn this into a 2&4 minute machine and add a model-O reproducer!

I do intend to buy a Model N reproducer in the future in order to play wax Amberols. I hadn't thought about a 2/4 conversion. I must admit it's a tantalizing idea.
