I’ve had mine since 1983. Burton motor so it’s earlier.

I use a Victor Orthophonic soundbox.

Sounds rich with even a bamboo needle.

Not only is the horn longer, but if I remember right, the composition of the metal is also slightly different. This has all been discussed ad nauseam elsewhere on the TMF.

The horns were Terne plated, which is an alloy of lead and tin.

For years it was believed that Re-Entrant horns were made of Terne plated steel, but in Issue No.1 (Spring 2002) of the CLPGS magazine "For the Record" it was stated that they were in fact made of Zinc alloy.

Yes, "terne plate" was a misnomer spread from a certain well known book publication which shall remain nameless!

The horn is zinc alloy and colossally heavy! $800 is a stupidly cheap price for this machine. Even in the UK where older collectors are a little jaded with the "big re-entrant prices" after peak levels in the 90s and younger collectors are blissfully oblivious to its virtues, this machine would probably still fetch around £2000-2500. That's UK Pounds, not Dollars. Go figure.

I have had that book for many years. It has a gold coloured dust jacket with the name of a famous auction house at the bottom.

I just checked and you're absolutely right although that wasn't the actual book I was thinking about! ;)

If the chap who won this saw it on the Forum, he's mighty lucky Garrett didn't post it to the Auctions section. We few Yanks familiar with these machines probably would have paid a multiple of the selling price, myself included. My congratulations to the buyer.

The chap who won it is a collecting friend who has been on this forum for over twenty years.

This 194 arrived safely today, and many thanks to the person who brought it to my attention. I too was surprised it sold for this price, I intended to bid a good deal more. The past few years have been difficult, but the phono gods recently have been offering some solace. This one even has a dealer plate, and serial number 56… this must be low, early. The last shot offers a size comparison with a credenza… it’s a shade smaller but the sound, blown away.
