Help identify Victrola

Post by Ben99 »

This machine was given to me recently by my mom. She got it from my grandpa. It’s been sitting for a lot of years but I do remember hearing it play Hank Williams when I was a kid. I can crank it up and it will almost come up to speed but when I put a record on it it drags it down really low. I didn’t see a badge on it anywhere. Just stickers. I’m wondering if it’s all original? Also the turntable doesn’t stay flat. It wobbles around pretty bad. I’m wondering if it’s even for one of these machines? Thanks for any help you can give. Ben

Ben, your answer is on the paper label pictured, VV-XVI.

James

PS:
For all of it's issues and missing parts, it would be less of a headache to look for a complete working machine. ;)

Hi Ben- Thanks for reaching out on the Forum- Lots of good folks here who know about these and other machines.
My opinion differs from James-

You have a nice, oak VV-XVI- The grain of the oak on the doors looks really nice. The case has been stripped, so will need to be refinished. The motor is correct, but you have the wrong turntable, which likely explains the wobble you are getting- Those turntables are fairly common and can usually be found for around $20. The other things that are missing are the knobs for the doors and a used needle cup- Again- These parts are fairly common.
Especially since it is a family piece, I think it is well worth restoring-- My guesstimate on total cost of the parts you need would be in the $100 neighborhood. I may have most of what you need, but lots of others on here can help as well. A Want AD in the Yankee Trader section will help you find the parts. Just read up on the "rules" for posting first.

Also look here for info. Scroll down to find your machine.

I looked again at your pictures- You also need a lock mechanism and data plate-- Perhaps check at your grandparents house or your mom's. You might find a bag with all your parts in it that were removed when the case was stripped.

That would surely be better. :clover:
(Also some door hinges, the motor board screws and lift knob are not seen.)

James.

Grandpa died in the 90s. These are all the parts it came with. Well these and sore records.

Ok- You've got your door hinges and screws. You've got the crank escutcheon (goes on side of case where crank enters the machine. The smaller knob is for your motor board--front left corner. And you have two of the four door knobs. Good deal- You are well on your way.

Be sure to check inside all the nooks and crannies. You might find some more parts-- Inside the lower doors are shelves for records- Check the back of the shelves. check inside the slats of the horn (upper doors) and under the motor board. Besides old useless needles, you may find a part or two.
I'll check my parts tomorrow sometime and see if i have anything that can help you--

By the way- Where are you located? You might live close to a forum member who could help you identify exactly what you need to complete the machine.

I'm in Virginia-- I know we have some folks in Washington and Oregon. And at least one guy in Idaho. Perhaps they will chime in.
