Very late Edison cylinder (5700+) survey request

Post by 52089 »

In another post I indicated that for a variety of reasons, no one really knows how many copies of the last cylinders might still exist. I'd like to change that, or at least get estimates.

If you are lucky enough to own any of the very late Blue Amberols - 5700-5719, would you please send me a PM indicating which one(s) you have. Please also let me know if you have posted any of these to YouTube so I don't count things twice. Individual responses will not be posted, published, or even retained for privacy and security reasons. I will also accept input along the lines of "my friend who wants to be anonymous has a copy of 5718".

Once sufficient time has gone by, I will publish the results, along with information (where available) about how many copies of each were authorized and actually pressed.

Again, for privacy and security reasons, please respond by PM for privacy and security reasons. Please also feel free to PM me with questions about this project.

Thanks in advance.

Kevin

The results really won’t be statistically valid.

Probably not, but it could be useful nonetheless. For example, I know of no one who has a copy of 5719, even the guy I knew who came very close (within 50) to having them all (except the school ones). Maybe some brave soul will own up to it.

I never saw any Edison Blue Amberols in the 5700+ series turn up for sale at least since I started collecting 15 years ago. My latest release Blue Amberol cylinders are “Mr. Hoover and Mr. Smith” by Billy Jones and Ernest Hare and “Jack of All Trades” by Frank Luther and His Pards. Most Blue Amberol cylinders I have seem to be late 1910s and early 1920s releases in the 3000-4500 series range.

I know of at least 2 that were offered for sale at the Wayne show in the last 5 years or so. I also know of a half dozen or so that sold on ebay years ago, but I haven't kept track of that closely in some time. One lot sold in 2002 had 2 from the 5700 block plus 2 more from the 5690s and at least one from the 5500s. It went for over $1700 at the time.

I kind of remember someone mentioning a 5700+ series cylinder for sale at the Mechanical Music Extravaganza in 2016 or 2017, but I didn’t see it. Maybe it was bought pretty early on the show day? I would imagine that it sold for at least $500 or $1,000 depending on condition.

I sold quite a few 5700's and 5600's at the wayne show a few years ago. I picked up a trash bag full of cylinders from the storage units of the late phonograph dealer Floyd Silver and they were all unplayed.

The 5700 and 5600 series cylinders you sold must have been the ones I recall seeing at Wayne. Before I had a chance to look at them, they must have sold. I kind of recall buying a couple of 5000 and 5100 series cylinders from either you or Richard Gordon around the same time, so maybe they were from the same collection.

The two Blue Amberols in my collection with the highest numbers that I have are in the 5600s.They are The Bum Song by Eddie Kirk and Shepherd Of The Hills by Orestes Orchestra. edisonplayer.
