Missing Plate on a Nice Columbia Gramophone

Post by kraftwerknation63 »

Hello Everyone!

Today I have found a little US Columbia Disc Graphophone in a French flea market. The motor run but he need a little restauration.
I have 2 problem on the machine.

First, I don’t found which model it is! He is very little. The basis is near 10”x10” (26cmx26cm).

The second is the plate is missing. The plate is originally near 8” diameter (20cm). And there is a little brass cone on the axis of the motor.

If anyone have information to found this parts. I will appreciate.
Thanks a lot

You have a very nice Columbia BH from ca. 1906. In my opinion a very good find. That cone is correct for a Columbia and the machine will require a Columbia platter. The horn looks to be in great shape. And you got the crank. I think you can put a ten-inch platter on this machine and be perfectly correct. These are not rare in the States. You might find one on eBay, although shipping would probably be expensive.

Thanks for your answer Jboger. I hope that I will found a nice plate. Because the machine is in very nice condition. I found this system of cone funny.

Do you know how the brake and speed control work? Columbia combined these functions in a single unit. In the front, near the handle, you will see a rod projecting out. You pull the plunger out to run the machine and turn the platter; you push it in to stop the motor and platter. And if you rotate the entire unit (left or right), you can control how fast the platter turns.

I think the "cone" is unique to Columbia but not sure.

The platter I have is a 12" one. Can someone confirm if it is actually a 10" platter that's needed? The one I have will work in any case but it may hang over the sides of the case.
If it's a 10" model that's needed, this seller has it and is excellent.

I notice in your original post now you mention the platter should be "close to 8 inches". Sorry, I missed this before. I don't know that Columbia had an 8" platter, but the same seller has a 7" platter if this is more correct:

If he does not ship to the EU I'll be happy to get this and forward it to you.
