In the days before Radar

Post by slammer »

Back in the day, early warning systems relied on people listening to approaching aircraft, they used sound mirrors in all shapes and sizes and they used funnels.
Browsing through the internet I came across this and thought......:
"How would that sound if I hooked it up to the HMV?"

At the ear end you install a pipe inserted into the horn of a HMV 102 and you can blow down the enemy's aircrafts with the Teddy Bears Picnic!

in the British coast there were listening stations with large concrete walls of concave shapes to concentrate the sound into a listening point, etc.... True engineering works!

I lived for quite some time on Malta and there at Il-Widna is, still standing and still functioning, a sound mirror, one of only two such built, the other one at RAF Denge in Kent. Not really open to the public as it is on TVMalta´s land, but if you ask at the gate they will give you the key.
I put my GoPro on a stick and stood in one of the three focal points, I could not get the camera as high as the original microphones would be but I could pick a faint roar up with even the little microphone in the camera. It is however much louder and more "Stereophonic" when you are standing there right in the focus and by moving along the line you can tell a difference in pitch, that way the listeners could tell from where any aircraft were coming in from and send the information to the antiaircraft batteries. The wall is aimed at Catania on Sicily where the Italians had an airfield, over 90 kilometers away.
The wall still has remains of the original forced anamorphic camouflage.

Bet nobody has thought about hooking up a Gramophone.

Once I did take a Columbia 202 portable to the Darius Miller Bandshell in the middle of Walnut Hill Park, New Britain, CT. Putting it on the stage, horn facing back against the inside of the dome, made it loud enough to hear easily at a considerable distance. Did this at midnight and would not recommend being in New Britain after midnight.

The sound mirrors & aircraft locating funnels are pretty cool and I would love to see someone hook one up to a standard wind up phonograph.

Right, because that would be inverse for the purpose for which this apparatus was designed.

I enjoyed that. Got me thinking.... There is a so-called "Nature horn" on one of the bicycle trails in the forest nearby. The idea is that you relax on a very comfy wooden bench and listen to the amplified sounds of nature.
Just for shoots and giggles I may take the HMV for a walk and freak the village out with a Brückner 78.
