At first, I thought it was an ingenious crapophone but my wife found out that a NZ collector has the same machine since a long time and that It could have been manufactured around 1905…. It’s on sale (best offer) at https://www.leboncoin.fr/collection/2628601518.htm (NOT MINE).
Anyway, it’s an interesting conversation piece!

PS: After looking the the labels form both sources, I'd say it's the same unit.

The French link is now dead so a big thanks to phonodesbois for saving the pictures of this rare machine which I enjoyed. I agree with James the NZ link shows the same machine. So how it got from New Zealand/Australia to France is a mystery. If it did.

I've never seen anything like that but does it play two and four-minute cylinders? also, do you need to switch out the needle very often? btw what do you call it, a phonograph or gramophone?

Phonograph dealer Charles Thomas from Newton Abbot, South Devon, England, registered the machine on 26 May 1905 in his home country (UK patent number 190511028), on 15 December 1905 in Canada (CA patent number 97757) and simultaneously in the USA (US patent number 842,982) and again on 14 May 1906 in the USA (US patent number 842,983).

On 22 May 1906, Charles Thomas, D. H. Slack and B. D. Webster founded "The Deuxphone Manufacturing Company" with a capital of £4,000. The company address: 29, Wolborough Street, Newton Abbot, South Devon, was close to Charles Thomas' phonograph shop.

Here is a picture of Wolborough Street, Newton Abbot dating from about 1905.
