Herzog Full Barrel Opening Mechanism

Post by dzavracky »

Hello all,

This has been something that has been on to-do list for awhile, since I need to make a new opening mechanism for my first full barrel project. Another forum member has reached out to ask me for some dimensions, so I figured it was finally time to sit down and do this. Solidworks has really given me hell tonight so I calling it for now    . I will be uploading in the next day or so, dimensioned drawing files for the full barrel opening mechanism, as well as photos of the one I own.

But here is what I have so far:

Cheers,

David

Hi David,

Nice work! John Duffy contacted me and I’m actually working on the same project. I am waiting on quotes from some of the fabricators we used that made the First Style Victor 10-50 changer parts. I’d be happy to review your SLDPRT files and dimensioned 2-D drawings. Have you created drawings for all the pieces?

i also have a full barrel cabinet in need of the closer mechanism for one side.

The pricing will depend on the quantity. Who else needs this part?

Mark

Hi Mark!

Are you making them out of brass? I was thinking about potentially asking if I can go back to my schools metal shop and use the waterjet to cut out a set before I move next month. Can you PM me your email so I can send you the SLDPRT files? I should have them done by the end of the day, and yes I do have files for each of the pieces.

I modeled the gears in Solidworks as best as I could use equation driven curves. The gear I ended up with is pretty darn close to the original. But I had to make an educated guess on some of the parameters. I suppose I could also go ask if I can go back and use the 3D scanner at school. That would give an exact copy. But I would have to take the rivets out to do so... and I don't really want to do that.

I need both sides of the changing mechanism. The one I have from the other cabinet is complete... but the lady who had this before me really did a number on it. She had mentioned taking the mechanism to some machinist, and I have no idea what he did to it. I am noticing that one of the arms is bent backwards... which probably accounts for why the cabinet doesn't close all the way.

Cheers,

David

Mark,
I have been talking to David who has been very helpful in getting some measurements.
I have a full barrel cabinet that needs this mechanism and would be interested if you are making them.
Let me know what you think the cost is and when available.
Thanks and all the best,

David Rosamond

I still need to double check some things.. but I am getting pretty close to a finished CAD file!

Hi David,

The drawings look good. I just sent you a PM with my address. I’ll review your dimensions and compare with mine. I’ll then check with some fabricators I work with to get an idea of the cost to produce these.

What sort of metal finish might be desired? The mechanisms are always very dirty so I’m not sure of the original color. One I have has a dark brass or gold finish the other a dirty nickel finish. Both are possible. A powder coat painted finish would work as well but plating is better.

Please send me a direct email to be put on the availability list. No commitment is needed at this time.

Update:

We are making steady progress on this project. Starting with David’s drawings my mechanical designer has reviewed them, made some corrections and has created the necessary fabrication drawings for the four pieces of sheet metal that comprise the closer. Each pair of closers requires 10 pieces plus the necessary fasteners. The fabricator requires complete engineering drawings.

The quotes for a minimum sample order of the 100 pieces of laser cut steel parts needed to make the.ten pairs of closers are pretty encouraging and lower than expected. There are still a few unknowns but the expected price would only be $200 to $249 per pair, 1 left, 1 right. This would be fully assembled. Plating, painting or raw finish are to be determined. For a professionally made custom part in small quantities this is quite reasonable especially given the value of a fully working Herzog cabinet.

We need to gather 10 orders to move ahead with this project. We’ll drop it otherwise.

Please contact me if you want to be on the “I’m interested” list.
