Do you know if the wood is Poplar or Pine?

Beats me - - perhaps both. The original specifications (as noted in Frow) merely stated "best grade lumber."

I would imagine for a machine to be made of best grade lumber, it would be solid oak or poplar. Probably poplar as it's the cheapest hardwood, whereas pine and fir are softwood. Frow does say that the Edison plans for the record storage box say that it is made of ⅞" pine, with a cover of 1 ¼" and with iron hinges and stenciling and painted in the appropriate color. So instead of door on the front, it sounds like you would lift the lid and access the records from the top. I'm assuming it would have looked similar to the Army Navy box when all closed up. I'm looking for some 8" tongue and groove wood planks, so I can try to make one.
