George, thanks for these great recordings! For me, instead of "He who dies with the most shellac wins", it would be "He who dies with the most mahogany wins!" from some wood cabinet nut. You see, I just bought a very nice Edison C-450 18th Century English Adam!

Most collectors know the name Owen Fallon and his Californians as a dime store label pseudonym for dance bands like Freddy Martin- but there really was an Owen Fallon, and he really did have Californians... one of whom played, of all things, flugelhorn!

Here they are in Hollywood playing a great rendition of "Keep On Croonin' A Tune" in June (?) 1925 on Sunset 1142- apparently this record is rare enough Rust wasn't aware of it:

It's an electrical recording which is odd for a two bit regional recording studio in 1925 but they seemed to have some issues with table speed... still an enjoyable romp.

Dan's great Berigan transfer from a week or so ago gave me the urge to post more of Bunny's work. Hope you enjoy it.

1. "I Can't Get Started With You", Red McKenzie's Rhythm Aces on Decca 790 from Feb. 1936. Berigan plays trumpet, Red sings. This seems to be where Bunny meets his future theme song:

2. Two months later, Berigan already has his vocal and trumpet arrangements pretty much down pat, 16 months before recording his breakthrough version for Victor, on Vocalion 3225:

4.Four months later, Berigan has landed at Victor, and employed a fellow named Larry Clinton as arranger. "Frankie And Johnny" is a nice, loud killer- diller, recorded June 1937 on Victor 25616:

"Deep Sea Low Down", the great Bernie Cummins New Yorker Hotel Orchestra, Victor 24053, 1932. A lively one- the lyrics are great as well. My maternal grandfather had a connection with Cummins; they somehow knew each other in the Akron/ Canton Ohio area in their younger years and reconnected when both landed in NYC in the later 1920s. My grandfather was a chief draftsman on the Empire State Building project. He met my grandmother on New Year's Day 1929 and they married in April 1930, after she turned 18. Legend has it they ditched their own wedding reception early to go dance to Cummins and then got plastered at the Stork Club.

Side note: my mother was present in the womb at Benny Goodman's Carnegie Hall Concert in January 1938 with my grandparents- she was born that February.
