It was in fact THE first "hit" record, appearing at #1 on the very first "chart" ever published: a "List of the Most Popularly Requested Phonograms", printed in The Phonoscope (iirc) in 1890.Wolfe wrote:George W. Johnson's recording of his "Laughing Song" is considered one of the first big record hits - whenever he first recorded it on cylinder in 1890-something. Then he re-recorded it a number of times for various companies.
