If you do plunge ahead with a wooden needle, stand right by the machine while you play it and be ready to grab the reproducer if it takes off skating across the record surface. If it does, it will go with amazing speed, and it can start skating at any point during play--a record can seem to be doing just fine, and a minute or so in, suddenly, ZOOM!
Thank you for the advice drh.

Very much appreciated. (Great 'end description' too !) :)

You will also discover that the smaller the diameter of the disc, the more likely it is to skate.
The early centre start discs are fun to demonstrate to the uninitiated. They look increasingly worried as the record plays, assuming that the reproducer will fall off at the end , then they breathe a sigh of relief as the outer rim stops it.

YOu can listen to this record! All you have to do is buy my Cheney phonograph, which has two reproducers, one for lateral 78s, and one for vertical records. Just put the sapphire ball stylus into the vertical reproducer and you're set. Marc.
