Rare Beatles 78

Post by Orchorsol »

Here's something unusual!

Also a previous attempt to upload it playing with a thorn needle on an Expert Senior, with a bit of narrative - the copyright owners had blocked my every attempt until I played only a few seconds. (For the new videos linked above, I raised disputes worded as kindly requests, which to my surprise were honoured.)

I don't think there's another 78 in existence that would be cooler to own than that one.
And it sounds so good.
Congratulations. What a spectacular find.

Hello Andy, I was just going to send you a PM about that record played on your new turntable! How did you manage to put your hands on this? Did a lot of tenners leave your pockets, or was it a lucky finding?

About the fact that your videos were dropped - that's weird, I thought they managed to find an agreement and that no-profit accounts could upload whichever background music they wanted (for profit accounts it's a completely different story).

Thanks all!

Marco, I paid quite a few hundred pounds for this record some years ago, but regarded it as a bargain at the time. It's amazing to own it but actually I'm thinking of selling it - so much money sitting there, and why? I guess it's worth a lot more than I paid for it. Sharing it on Youtube and having it pass through my hands would still be a great pleasure to have had.

Regarding copyright blockages on Youtube, there are certain artists and/or their publishers who routinely block everything completely. Examples I know of are the back catalogues of the Eagles, Led Zeppelin, the Beatles. The majority of copyright material is allowed with monetizing of advertisements going to the publishers, but some isn't.

I believe the mathematical formula is
Fab4 = Fab × Fab × Fab × Fab = 78

James.

Was that a pressing made for jukeboxes, or were they still making 78's as a regular issue in Britain into the 1960's? It's a nice find, that's for sure.

.

HMV made them for the Indian market well into the 60's. There's other 60's pop acts that you can find on the HMV Indian 78's too. Britain quit 78's in a general sense a couple years after the U.S., about 1961-62, about the same as Canada.

In the USA, 78s started dying about 1957 and by 1959 were down to just a trickle, at least for regular pop records. Here's a blog about the topic, including photos of a couple of 1960 releases:
