This sounds fun, actually--a way to pass around records. I wouldn't mind a cleaner copy of Sam Ash & the quintette singing "My Lady of the Telephone," or just go get the Joseph Philips version on Edison--Would LOVE to get some Edison classical records; orchestra music sounds so good on the Diamond Disc format but so far I've bought DD's twice & got two copies of "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen." Not even joking. Even the old Victor Light Opera Company can be a lot of fun; I love their records.

Vernon Dalhart is an artist I actually enjoy. Some of his old 78s and DD's are kind of fun; my A-200 was full of records when I got it and one of them was a delightful Vernon Dalhart record titled "Doin' the Best I Can"--If you ever find a copy in a batch of discs, it's kind of fun. And I enjoyed "New River Train" on 78, believe that was a Brunswick electric record.

A lot of the really common 78s are actually great fun. Case in point, did Prince's Orchestra or Joseph C Smith ever make a bad record? Doubt it. And Hawaiian records may seem boring, but the ones labeled "March" are often kind of fun to listen to. They sound a bit like modern indie music sometimes.

@Inigo, the Edison cabinets are strong enough to balance ladies on the corners of--I know that because I have balanced on the corner of other phonographs so I could hang up a radio antenna. Didn't have a step-ladder. An Electrola is flimsier than an Edison cabinet & I could balance on the inside of that, and I'm a full-grown man six feet tall. Didn't matter--Got my radio antenna hooked up.

Nope. Unlike emos, radio antennas don't hang themselves.

Isn't that statement covered by your first amendment?
Even though a little hearted joke about self harm could be considered in poor taste by some, there's probably some who'd consider your avatar pornographic or your comment about not being invited to dinner parties in poor taste too?
Perhaps a PM would have been more appropriate instead of hitting the report button?

And I was going to let it go but just cannot.

As a teacher who has students who go through pain everyday, sometimes for reasons known, and sometimes for reasons unknown, I can tell you that when we fail to recognize that hurt
and we lose a student because they take their own life, there isn't a single person in the school who doesn't feel that loss for the rest of their lives. And I'll tell you, the last thing I was
looking for as I sat down at my computer to log into the forum was some crass humor that basically ended conversation. I have to imagine it gets the same response at dinner parties, if
you're ever invited to them...

crickets

Sorry, I can't stand by and be a cricket. I've reported the post.

Agreed, on all points.

I bought a 78 from the other side of my continent. I contacted the seller with instructions on how to post the fragile item, and got a reply indicating that they knew how to pack and post a 78 safely. Several weeks later, the record arrives, placed in an ordinary office paper envelope. Not even bubblewrap or newspaper. I feared for the worst when I opened it, and found it in perfect condition. Sometimes we can be lucky.

Probably because it was handled by "machine" most of the way, it ended up in with all the "flat" sorting devices _ no human hands until the very end.
