Howards Restore A Finish
I see members recommending it but besides there being different types depending on the wood finish ---is there one of their products recommended prior for cleaning, smoothing, and general preparation? Thanks.

Re: Howards Restore A Finish
Used as directed, in most cases there's no real need to prep before using Restor-a-Finish. You wipe it on and wipe it off, and in the process you are removing a great deal of any surface dirt. There are videos on YouTube that give good demonstrations of how to use it and what to expect.
Having said that, if something is particularly grimy, then yes, by all means use Goop or GoJo first as usual.
