I am restoring a VV-405 that was immaculate inside but had significant veneer damage and water staining on the outside. I have already replaced the damaged veneer, restained and wiped on shellac on the outside with good results. Any suggestions on doing the detailed scrollwork legs? I can clean and stain but using shellac is almost impossible due to quick drying even with alcohol thinning. I was thinking using a spray on lacquer?

Have you tried painting shellac with a brush over those parts? Most people think it's not feasible, but I do it all the times and it works perfectly. Thin layers, watch out for drops.

Have you considered spray shellac since you are using shellac elsewhere?

I would clean with GoJo (non-pumice) and a toothbrush. Jerry
