Amberola V Not Raising Diamond B Reproducer High Enough

Post by Dave D »

Hello,
I just finished up an Amberola V that has been in the same family since new. I noticed when they dropped it off that the reproducer weight was not being raised high enough to properly clear the record, but I had hoped after I cleaned and lubed everything that it would be ok. It's not.

Any advice on how to make it go just a tiny bit higher?
Thanks!

Dave,

Is the raising mechanism anything like the Amberola 50, 75, etc? If so, I've seen where the cam end of the raisng/lowering lever has worn and does not give the full range of movement that it once had.

No Jerry, it's not that at all.

Do you have access to a machine with the same reproducer? If you swapped reproducers you would know if the issue is with the mechanism or the reproducer. Just a suggestion...

Some detailed photos would help the diagnosis...

I had already thought of that and determined it is wear in the lifting mechanism.

I epoxied a thin strip of brass to the bottom of the reproducer and that allows me to get enough clearance when a record is removed or put on the mandrel. There was just enough wear in the lifting mechanism that made this a necessity. I nickel plated the brass and it blended right in with the rest of the reproducer. It's reversible and did not modify the reproducer. I am happy with it.

Check to see if the silk cord between the diaphragm and stylus is too short. Make sure the eyelet is correctly positioned at the stylus hook. Too short a connection could cause your trouble even with the lift lever pushed down.
Hope this helps!

I had the same trouble with mine. I simply stuck a short piece of wire insulation onto the end of the lift finger. It's not for everyone. ;)
