Beautiful work!!

The only thing I might do is sand the the flats where the bolt holes are smooth, but the pitting is pretty deep. I think you did an excellent job.

If you decide to seal with lacquer or clear coat, mask off the teeth of the gear.

If a return to perfect virgin metal is required no finishing method rivals the use of friable water stones such as those used in Japan. But such perfection is only justified by very special metal finishing projects such as the swords Japan is famous for. Such stones can also be used to carve and finish jade. These stones are not suitable for finishing brass or soft alloys, since the metal is too soft and the stone particles tend to embed themselves in it.
