Low temp aluminum welding rods... Do they work?

The slick salesmen who sell them at fairs, swap meets and flea markets always seem to do amazing things with them, but I've never been able to make them work.

I find them handy for filling in holes in beer cans. Other than that, I totally agree with Jerry Van.
