How to remove the shaft from a mandrel

I have an Edison Standard model e with a broken shaft. (Broken by the bearing). I have another shaft I could install, but wasn’t sure how to remove the end of the mandrel. Is it soldered? Pressed?

Thanks!

The mandrel is pressed onto the mandrel shaft.

The shaft and the mandrel parting company is what happens when too much force is applied to the mandrel when the mandrel drive shaft is frozen by the pot metal bearing. The shaft and mandrel were never meant to come apart once they were joined.

So I have attached a picture. The mandrel with broken shaft was from a std model e. The bare shaft was from a std model d. I didn’t break the mandrel shaft (bought a parts machine that way), but was wondering if it were possible to remove the broken shaft and replace with the other one.

I haven’t gone ‘caveman’ and cut it out, but may end up going that route if it is just junk.

Thanks for any advice or thoughts you have!

Maybe someone has a better idea on removing the broken shaft but here's mine.

Take a short length of 2x4 and drill a hole just large enough for the broken shaft to fit. Drill the hole through the board. While holding the mandrel vertical, tap and drive the broken shaft out. Tap from the tapered end and drive the broken shaft through the board. You might use the broken piece as a tool to make contact being careful not to damage the mandrel. The two pieces will separate.

If others have a better idea, let's hear it. I won't be offended.

With a little tap it came right out! I didn’t realize the only thing really holding the mandrel on the shaft is the very end. The raised part of the shaft towards the middle fits through the hole on the mandrel

Thanks everyone!
