How do you remove the mandrel shaft on an Edison Fireside?

Just wondering how to remove. I can unscrew, but tapping with a small hammer and wood block does not make it come out. Any ideas?

I've never had the mandrel shaft off a Fireside. But I'd start by taking the collar off the other end of the mandrel shaft. That should allow you to slide off the mandrel. That might allow you to grip the shaft for possible removal. I believe the mandrel only makes contact at each end so scars, once they were sanded, should not interfere with performance.

What opinions do others have?

Thanks for the thoughts. I was looking to replace the mandrel shaft from another bed plate. I guess I could replace the whole thing, but the stenciling is better on the original. The mandrel shaft is worn on the end near the collar.

Remove the retaining collar and slide the mandrel off, as suggested above. Then, WARM the shaft up with a propane torch at a low setting, just adjacent to the shaft mount. This should melt the dried up oil that's most likely "gluing" the shaft in place. Use care to keep the flame away from any paint. Gentle heating should be sufficient. If the oil begins to smoke just a bit, that should be plenty of heat.
