What is THIS fresh hell?

Post by CharliePhono »

Some of you followed my recent thread on the retainer clips for Victor spring barrels. Well, got everything together and am enjoying a nice little concert when the following occurred. The music began sounding like something from a drunken dream.

Watch the speed indicator needle and hear the accompanying noise. Governor? Speed control, etc.? What do I need to look for to remedy this? I've gotten so frustrated with this motor that I'm looking into getting another. Is whatever this is fixable?

Governor weights are lose or becoming lose.
Governor springs may be lose.
Weights sound like they're banging up against something.

Bet the assembly shoved one of the end pieces out of position. ;)

As JeffR said- it sounds like the gov weights are coming into contact with the housing-- Look at the motor as it is running and see if you can determine where they are hitting. It could be as simple as moving the governor weight assembly down the gov shaft a bit-- BUT make sure it is totally wound down before doing so. Simply loosen the screw on the collar that the gov springs attach to and slide it down the shaft toward the speed control pads. Then re-tighten the collar screw and try it out. You will have to readjust the speed.
Next thought would be incorrect governor springs-- too long (or perhaps too thin/weak)-- which allows the weights to spread out too far-- and hit the casting.

Could he flip the governor weights around if that is the problem ?
Sort if a half-assed fix though.
